Osama - An emotional stir

Shocking and Stunning – Probably I got hold of two perfect words to describe this movie. My first ever Afghan movie experience (ofcourse with subtitles) turned out to be a perfect stunner. No heavy pathos background scores, no 'stuffed' sentiment scenes, but yet this movie shakes you up with its emotion packed visual. The title appears to be very misleading as one would easily think that this movie is about Osama-bin-laden. But, it is not. A very simple story with beautiful narration – A 12 year old Afghan girl and her mother loses their jobs when Talibans take over the rule since it’s forbidden for women to work according to the Taliban regime.

Since there is no male in the family, the little girl is forcefully disguised as a boy to find a job and help the family’s survival. The girl is also named ‘Osama’ and made to work in a small store before she was called for a compulsory military training by the Talibans. The whole movie is about this little girl’s efforts to try and keep away from the Talibans, as once caught, death is the going to be the only verdict. The movie’s length is less than 90 minutes and it’s really very occupying. There was never a moment where you can detach yourselves from the movie. The movie showcases the brutal treatment of the Talibans, especially against women.

Inspired by a true incident, this movie is the first complete Afghan movie ever shot. Thanks to Siddiq Barmak for the wonderful direction and since other characters don’t really have much screen space, it is Osama (Marina Golbahari) and Espandi (Arif Herati) who score full marks. I strongly recommend this movie for all movie buffs as well as non-movie buffs

I mean, it’s a must-watch for everyone ;)
