Dasavatharam - Hail Kamal, not the movie.

I hate to write movie reviews, but yet I wanted to write about this movie - Dasavatharam, which is probably the most anticipated movie after Sivaji.

Note : For those who know about me, please do not consider this review as biased just because am a hardcore Rajini fan. I was also very anxiously awaiting the movie just as any other Kamal fan. Another thing to be emphasized is, am a die-hard Rajini fan, but that doesn't mean that I am a Kamal hater. I am writing this review as a normal fan, who carries the usual expectations about such a big film.

Now, the review....
Century Berryessa 10, San Jose, California - This is the theatre where I watched Dasavatharam. It was the very first show in the USA, but the tickets were available at the counter at 9pm for 9.30 show. It might be because the next day is a working day. However, the theatre was full when the movie started.

I'm not going to narrate the story here as there is nothing significant to be narrated as such. It's all about Kamal in the movie. The first twenty minutes of the movie seemed to justify the hype created, but sadly there ends the fascination. After that, its all about drama, chasing and usual cinema stuff. The biggest disappointment comes in the form of the way the story has been handled. It could have been much much better.

Kamal scores full marks as usual, but out of his ten characters, I would give maximum marks only to Rangarajan Nambi, Balram Naidu, Poovaraagan and Fletcher. May be for the rest of the characters, a bit low. Differentiating the two characters in a dual action role itself is difficult (Am not taking films like ATM, Billa into consideration as both Vijay and Ajith have not even bothered about that), but performing ten different roles in ten totally contrasting ways is simply brilliant. Not just the acting, but the body language, voice modulation and manerisms were totally different from one another for which Kamal deserves exuberant compliments. Nobody but Kamal could have done such a brilliant job. Special mention to his fantabulous 11th avathar - the dialogue writer (missed to notice the title card and I was just wondering whether it was Crazy Mohan). He has really excelled as a dialogue writer.

But, once you come out after watching the movie, you can't help the feeling that the story is made to fit the ten characters and not the other way round. A few characters seemed to be un-necessarily stuffed into the movie, just to make it ten. The "Khalifullah Khan" character is one such example. If you try to make sense the need of each and every character in the movie, the question "Is it necessary?" would arise. The movie doesn't seem to be coherent with too many characters coming in and trying to get stick in the screenplay. Asin looks cute, but her characterization was a bit irritating as it is quite difficult to imagine such a dumb teenage girl in this era.

The desperation of making this movie a commercial hit was clearly visible throughout the movie and it didnot seem like a Kamal movie at times. Mallika Sherawat singing and dancing for a tamil song in a Las Vegas night club and the pistol taking away the cancer from Avtar Singh's throat are good examples for the blemishes. When movies like "Anbe Sivam" donot get the commerical value, one cannot expect such kind of a classical film on such a huge investment. But the thing is, the movie stumbles not knowing which path to follow - the commercial or the classical. The response in the B and C centres remains to be seen, as there are nothing much in this movie to please them.

I would say that too many things are tried out in this movie, which is difficult for the audience to take. Too many things conveyed, too many characters used and everything was a overdose. There is a saying, "Too many cooks spoil the food" but, here too many ingeredients have spoiled the taste of the food. The technical qualities of this movie is not so brilliant as hyped. The second big disappointment comes in the form of the graphics used in this movie. They were a touch better than the usual tamil cinema graphics, but nothing extra-ordinary. The much expected "tsunami" set was also not so appealing.

Songs, except "Mukuntha Mukuntha" and "Kallai mattum" are pretty ordinary and the usual trend of the songs becoming big hits after the movie's release doesn't seem to happen this time. But, the background score was appreciable.

After Kamal, comedy was the next best thing in this movie. The "Balram Naidu" character was the best for me out of all the ten which was characterized beautifully for handling the comedy part. Infact, it got the movie going in the second half. Thanks to the editor for making the movie fast paced. The first half was infact better than the second. "Ulaga Nayagane" song is used as the credit song and the make-ups Kamal had to undergo for all the characters were shown briefly, which was good to see, but it was K.S.Ravikumar who spoiled the visual by his annoying screen presence and dancing. I don't really know why is he very particular about showing his face in all his movies.

There is a lot to talk about Kamal's make-ups but it is not wise to disclose everything here. It was really hard to belive that Kamal has donned certain characters as you cannot really identify him! Some makeups were really amazing and some were looking odd. Let me rate the get-ups out of ten.
Balram Naidu - Very minimal makeup yet very realistic - 10/10
Vincent Poovaraghan - 9.5/10
Fletcher - 9/10
Nambi - 9/10
Japanese - 8.5/10
Bush - 8/10 (Looked odd in the first long shot, but later on it was good)
Krishnaveni Paatti - 7.5/10
Avtar Singh - 7/10
Khalifullah Khan - 6.5/10
The tenth character is Govind, the normal looking Kamal, so I don't think I need to rate that.

There is a lyric in the song "Ulaga Nayagane" which says "Oscar dhooramillai", but after spending so much of money and putting up a lot of effort, it seems that Oscar is not even near the vision. People can now stop comparing this movie with hollywood as it is nowhere near to their technical qualities.

After the movie was over, I came out quickly and was waiting near the car for my other friends to come. They came to me, shook my hands and said "Sivaji was far better", "Thalaivar, thalaivar dhaan". Mind you, they are not Rajini fans. May be since they all know that am a Rajini fanatic made them say this to me, but I was not comparing the movie and infact I didnot even talk bad about it. They didnot like the movie as much as I did! The thing is this, people would automatically start comparing a Rajini film and a Kamal film. If we say that there is no story in Dasavatharam, his fans would argue whether Sivaji had a story in it and start making the comparisons. I am not here for comparisons and I have always insisted that Rajini and Kamal shouldn't be compared as they serve the cinema industry in two different aspects, but it is a painful fact that the story line is very feeble and hard for people to correlate.

Though not a part of the reivew, I wanted to write this because I was just wondering what it takes to please the audience. You might have put on a hell lot of efforts, show them something that they have never seen before, but it takes something special to reach the masses. Sivaji was not made with such big efforts, Rajini didnot do ten roles, but still nobody can deny the fact that when people came out from the theatres after watching "Sivaji", they felt so energetic and happy after watching "Mottai Boss" on screen. May be that is called the "Rajini magic".

One-Line:
Worth watching for Kamal.Don't carry much expectations though. Time pass, bigtime!

I think it was a very fair review given by you abt the movie...But still i am not able to accept the fact that people came out really excited after watching sivaji...the motta boss...i think there were fair amount of people who were touch disappointed...as its not rajini's best movie so far...that was bcoz they expected more from shankar...no disappointment from Rajni's side..only from shankar's side..i guess its all bcoz of the hype created by the media...people expect too much when they come for such big movies...so i would say i felt the same touch disappointment in Sivaji too....thanks!

so u say that dasa is worse ?? :P
Lol... dude, everyone knows that rajini films will be larger than life. but, the hype was built too much for dasa saying that its equivalent to hollywood.... hollywood vaasal varaikkum kooda pola :P

Chaos theory n all will not be precieved by most of the audience. Sivaji attracted most children and it had the "feel-good" aspect, which this film lacks as its too complex. So, such a complex screenplay cannot be entertaining for all, but its not the case for Sivaji. It entertains everyone if you are really looking for a good entertainer. If you say that Dasa is a better entertainer, nobody would agree. It is just another flick from Kamal's dream factory, may be the first film of its kind!

A fair review. It reflects the true opinion of lots of people whom I spoke to. But as a person said above, how much ever justification u provide, people will treat u as a Thalaivar fan. Coming to the movie, I always appreciate and admire Kamal's effort and hardwork. But he doesnt know how to channelize it. May be Im too young to say that. I expected this movie to bomb at box office. Unlike Sivaji where hype was following the movie, Aascar was following the hype for Dasa. But all the efforts ended in vain. One way it is good that the movie didnt create a big hype among B and C centers.. Already there are mixed responses in A center. I do not want to comment much abt B and C as those centers already declared the movie as an alien.

I want to compare Dasa with Navarathri. In Navarathri charecters are fitted for story line. Nadigar thilakam had done fair justification to all the 9 roles by showing out Navarasam in his acting. But in Dasa I heard that just for the sake of breaking records (more roles done by an individual), story line is altered to fit 10 roles. My conclusion is Unless u hav repeat audience for such huge budget movies, producer should insure himself to safeguard his future. I fear Aascar is following the foot path of Kalai Puli S Dhanu..

To all others who commented that Sivaji has disappointed.. History is already rewritten. Sivaji satisfied the majoiry of the audience. We never saw any negative response until the first 50 days after movie released. May be some intellectuals expect a lot. Those intellectulas can watch Heyram, Aalavandhan, Mumbai Xpress and latest to the list DASAVATHARAM.. hehehehehe

can u clearly explain me the story n the roles 10 kamals play in it?

dinesh

dei if u tell me no story in dasa then plz tell me wat is story according to u?....coming to CG and graphics its not only that tsunami scene, cant u see the quality when diff kamals interact thru out the movie, that stands up to hollywood standard (example: the climax stunt bet japanese and fletcher)...hollywood na appadiye compare pannatheenga pa...namma kitta avlo panam kidayathu...tsunami scene is a good attempt..it leads the way for future works in indian cinema...then ur comparison between sivaji hype and dasa hype...cud u justify the huge investment done in sivaji..in sivaji the huge investment is only on the sets for song sequence but here it is all on the technology...i wud never say its a flawless movie but a fantastic indian movie of this kind....gr8 team effort

Gowri Shankar said...

@ dinesh

that was what i said.... its the first movie of its kind and again u are mistaken. ther are no rooms for comparison. despite me repeating the same thing, ppl think that i have compared both movies. the point is, dasavatharam's commercial inclination is understandable as they need to recover huge money. the point i mentioned abt sivaji is, it is easily preceivable by everyone and dasa though it has a theory behind it, its very complex and ppl dont attempt to know abt the story, but just appreciate kamal's efforts. regarding cg, ya i meant that was disappointing because, we dont really know how much money is required to match hollywood standards. since it was told that its equivalent to hollywood, the expectations were as such. it was even compared to "tomorrow never dies". thats y i told like that. if u go without expecting anything like a hollywood flick, its definitely an enjoyable movie.

Anonymous said...

dinesh

come on man if u ask 4 xplanation 4 all 10 roles i can say that better watch the first 5 mins again.....

Gowri Shankar said...

i dont need explanations. also, watever u say, correlating everything is difficult for everyone. very complex. see, i was worried abt the business of the movie. infact, i was hoping that if this movie clicks, then kamal wud get money to make maruthanayagam. if the movie is to make huge profit, its possible only if B and C centres are satisfied and repeat audience come to theatres.

Anonymous said...

if u say that there is no room for comparison then i wud feel that last two para is unneccessary..

Gowri Shankar said...

well, i have mentioned that it is not a part of the review. also, i wrote that because, despite all the efforts that kamal has taken, ppl very easily say that this not good, that is not good n all. that was a true incident. i am expecting the person who told like that to comeup with a comment. i dont really know why she reacted that way. let her explain wat she didnt like.

sivaji is a pure socio-commercial entertainer. everybody who is open for a good entertainer will like it dude. how do children get very attracted towrads that movie? that was the mass and rajini effect am talking about and i didnot take any credit away from the movie and kamal. infact, u left all the positives in the review and u started talking abt the one which is not a part of the review, but my personal experience. people can always like/dislike a movie regardless of whomsoever has acted in it. u shud really see only if the review is fair.

Anonymous said...

It is a nuetral review for most part except comparing with sivaji.

Work done by Dr Kamal is highly comandable and should be respected. there is no one in asia to do that.

Dont compare sivaji or any rajni movies with kamals.
they are off two different poles.

for those who were justified by 10 roles, can you explain the significance of puvuragan or the old lady( for which Manorama would have been best choice since kamal was horrifying) to the initial 10 minutes or story line.

to conclude Rajni makes movies for people where as kamal makes movies for his experimentaion and passion which may or may not suit people and most importantly producers.

watch DASA if you have to acknowledge an actors hardwork.. nothing much

i just wish dis film turns out to be a big hit...@gowrishanker even sivaji had a big hype...dey showed everythin on sun tv...buying tikets via cells oof wat not??kamlas dasavadaram requires more applause den sivaji sivaji was nuthin.... :)

@ rahul,

y have u compared rajini and kamal now?? for all those who illusionary intellectuals like u who call sivaji as nothing, read http://gowrifocussed.blogspot.com/2007/09/two-great-idols_8028.html

do u mean to say that only kamal fans are the intelligent audience in the world and others are dumb? Well, there are blemishes in dasa and u got to accept that. u leave everything behind and start criticising sivaji. y is that? i see that attitude in most kamal fans. History is already written. sivaji's success is a known fact dude. u may/may not like it. that is ur opinion. but, sivaji is a hit. if its nothing, y did so many ppl like it? including children?

agreed that it was a brilliant effort by kamal. i didnot take anything away from the movie or his efforts. acting in same tone n all this is not the place to argue, even i can show u examples.

i am really puzzled y all of u are leaving the review part n start the comparison? Did I ever compare it in the blog?

Rahul said...

well u compared it dude... just c. u hav also writtn abt sivaji.. if u mention abt rajini y cnt i mention abt kamal...tell me wat was so special abt sivaji??well.. did sivaji run like chandramukhi 4 wich u proclaim dat sivaji was a big hit.. i agree its a hit but den der r also people who dint like it...

Gowri Shankar said...

i didnot compare. didnt u read the lines " I am not here for comparisons and I have always insisted that Rajini and Kamal shouldn't be compared as they serve the cinema industry in two different aspects" ? You should understand one thing. Sivaji didnot run so many days because it was released in that much theatres all around. It collected huge money. At the end of the day, it is not the no.of days which determines a hit, but the money it collects in the box office. if i start explaining the success of sivaji, i cannot stop. thanks for the idea. let me put everything in my next post. i tried to inisist that THERE IS SOMETHING SPECIAL REQUIRED TO APPEAL TO THE MASSES. I have also written abt sivaji coz there was nothing as special as 10 roles or a mallika sherawat dancing for a tamil song in Las vegas, but still it set fire in the box office. that is the x-factor am talking abt.

Rahul said...

ok dude lets not fight on this topic...both are gud actors lukily u said sivaji didnt run 4 so many days...ya kamlas film cnt reach de masses i agree... but u cnt blame him 4 dat..

Gowri Shankar said...

its always a debatable topic, but kamal himself has told in a recent interview to 'HEADLINES TODAY' that both of them mutually agreed to do different kind of films. so, its always not wise comparing both. And reg sivaji, its a blockbuster. it didnot run 1000 days, but u shud understand CM was released normally, while Sivaji was screened in almost 18 theatres in chennai alone. so, its almost triple the number of theatres and calculate how many number of shows it wud've been. so, the number of shows have gone up higher than CM.

Rahul said...

same with dasa.. lets c in a wekk weder dasa gets more money or sivaji? anyways lets end dis debate here...nice debatin wid u dude... lolz im rakuls frnd he askd me 2 comment

Gowri Shankar said...

lets see if that happens. if that happens, i'll be happy indeed. atleast it'll give him some chance to do 'marudhanayagam'. if dasa beats sivaji(rare possibility though since this movie lacks appeal in B and C centres), watch out for ROBOT....

cheers!
thanks for reading!

Dai..I feel comfortable on seeing ur review...Its really gud..Invoking me to watch movie soon...Usually people find hard time to understand about kamal movie..I use to watch kamal movie with out single distraction...So i mostly get in to the movie..so i like his movie very much...thats y i told n that previous comment...Every Kamal movie s compare to Rajini movie...This s also same, comparing to sivaji movie....Rajini s for style..he s for acting this s same for all their movies....

Rajini & Kamal are two goal posts..We are palying between them :)

i dono y u hav given such a bad review. i dont understand why.
basically it is a tamil movie. kamal for his age doing so much is very appreciatable. but anyways cuz others commenting on the storyline is very easy but the one who makes it wil know the difficulty.
why not oscar?
his acting wil take him to greater heights.
this is dasavatharam review...not review of rajini's style!<<""Sivaji was not made with such big efforts"">>??? HE MITE HAVE NOT DONE 10 ROLES BUT U BEING AN ARDENT FAN OF RAJINI MUST BE VERY SURE AND AWARE OF HIS AGE AND THE COST OF THE MOVIE!
i agree ur a great fan of rajini, but comparing(indirectly)personalities wit different styles and talents is totally not good.
Rajini is different in his own way and so is KAMAL but please stop comparing.its not nice !
So if u want to write bout sum bad uneffortless rotted storyline PLEASE write bout "Kuruvi"...

@ anonymous,

well, this is the review about dasavatharam movie and i think there is nothing wrong in it. The title itself says that 'Hail kamal'. He is indeed appreciated. Finding faults is the critic's job and its not their job to make stories. Moreover, I have not compared Rajini and Kamal(directly or indirectly). That was about reaching the masses and how people perceive a movie. You shud've read the rest of the comments before you have posted yours. Never I have mentioned a word about Rajini Style in my blog.

Oscar award for the movie is a day-dream. that s what I meant and no question marks on kamal's acting talents.

You got to accept that Dasavatharam has flaws. There is equal amount of appreciation and criticism in the blog. I cant help if you see only the other side of it.

First of all, I feel pity for Great Kamal Hassan….
Becoz,I cant say that the film was gud only due to kamal’s effort..
I like Kamal very much, but not the movie and the review was very neutral (even Sivaji disappointed me, but Dasa more than Sivaji)
I liked that Nambi character and his episode very much…and I was in a serious confusion whether to watch movie as a serious one or comedy stuff, because Fletcher was depicted as most powerful villain but the police (Balaram Naidu) is doing comedy..
And it would have been nice if there were only 4 to 5 kamals in movie, literally no need of ten at all….And also the film, is full of chasing scenes that I got bored in the second half repeatedly watching kamal running with Asin and Fletcher chasing them..
And Asin was totally irritating(Just like Kovai Sarala’s ‘perumal’ comedy with vivek)
I like movies like ‘virumandi’ and I was the one who feel that Kamal was only hero with all heroic qualities in the whole India(Like dancing,Acting, his gym body at the age of 54 and many more)..
But im disappointed with the movie….And I think Kamal’s effort was gone in vain and I feel all can watch the movie once, only because of Kamal..

Gowri,

If you dint want to compare the movies, then you shouldnt have included what ur so called friends @ rajini fans said comparing the two movies. Dont u think your intention of not comparing the 2 movies fail?

BTW, how much ever you claim your review to be neutral, traces of ur -ve bias towards Kamal (due to the high +ve bias towards rajini) shows up). Still, its a fairly decent@unbiased review.

Abt my views on Dasa and on people's comments about the movie, I wish to write something soon on my long dead blog spot.

Hi gowri...

Ur blog jus reflected my feeling about the movie.. Kamals hard work is really commendable but the movie as such is not as expected.. He cud hv given little more importance to all the other characters and cud have presented a movie in lot more better way like he did with the Nambi episode... I cud have watched the nambi episode 5-6 times than watching the entire movie... as u said hail kamal not movie!!!

Anonymous said...

Friends,
The below thing which i got from my friend would help to understand the uniqueness of the film. Hope this helps!!

PS:am not a kamal fan or a Rajini Fan.I felt the movie lacks something.. may be the below explanation helps
-----------------------------------
Some guys have claimed they haven't understood chaos theory which plays such an important part in the film. As a physics student, I've decided to explain it a bit so that people can appreciate the brilliance of the film.

What is Chaos?
Basically a chaotic system is one wherein long term predictions are impossible. Like for example, if I push a car, I know that it is going to move and it will continue to do so if I go on pushing it on and on. However, in a chaotic system, this situation cannot be predicted over a long period of time. Weather, for example, is a chaotic system. No matter how good your instruments are, you simply cannot predict the weather with 100 per cent accuracy over a long term basis and forecast it.

What is the Butterfly Effect?
It is the most important component of a chaotic system. Basically, small perturbations results in amplifications which completely destroys the original nature of the system and makes prediction impossible. If a butterfly flaps its wings in Africa, it could result in a cyclone in USA.(Mark the word COULD.) A highly dumbed down explanation of the butterfly effect is in the film Anniyan, where Vikram's sister dies because a liquor shop owner sells liquor on a dry day.

OK, how does Dasa incorporate it?

In essence, Dasa talks about eight characters who are inconsequential as such, but are integrated in a larger picture. Without Bush, the plane would have been called back. Without Shinghen, Govind would be dead. Without the tsunami, the world would have been destroyed. Even Krishnaveni (the old woman) plays a very important role. If she had not put the vial in the idol, maybe Govind would have recovered it then and there and a powerful weapon would have been unleashed. The very fact that it went into the idol meant that it was being accelerated to its destiny. Without Kaifulllah Khan, Govind would have never escaped... the list simply goes on.

OK, so does the film talk about theism or atheism?
Neither. It talks about how humans drive the destiny of the world.

The idol that is drowned in the sea along with Rangarajan in 12th century by Chozha king results in a fault being developed at the bottom of the ocean and creates tremors more than 800 years later. These tremors result in the Tsunami. This again is a classic case of Butterfly Effect wherein a seemingly inconsequential event (the drowning of the idol) saves Tamil Nadu from being wiped off the face of the earth.

Now tell me, does THIS movie lack a story? This movie has the most beautiful story ever attempted in Indian cinema. Unfortunately, Indian viewers and critics are obsessed with the "boy meets girl" and "revenge" themes, so they fail to see the story in this master piece.

Hi Gowri...

I just watched Dasavatharam... I couldnt understand how people are still saying its Technically good and Quality movie.. I think they are Aaskar Ravichandran's family members...

Every scene is created with graphics.. it looks horrible.. Even Vittalacharya would have done better job.. especially Tsunami scenes..

About different get-ups of Kamal: He is now became the role-model for the school kids for their upcoming fancy dress competition... Kamal tried so much with others money.. he would have definitely not done these experiments with his own production...

The second of story is pictured alongside of Chitambaram-Pondy-Velankanni etc., but while chasing Govind Kamal, Asin, Fletcher Kamal are travelling "Parakum Train" of chennai, and jumping out of "Chindadripettai" railway station...

What does KS Ravikumar and Kamal thinks about fans??? are we fools??? may be they are correct!

I dont know how that 12th century scenes are connected with current situations???

And Why P.Vasu & Rekha is sitting on climax stadium scene?? They were no where connected with Govind Kamal...

There are so many flaws... but im tired writing all of them... my best advice to all who didnt watch the movie so far... PLEASE DONT WATCH...

Last but not least... The movie shown that Bush Character is little crack, and dont know some basic stuffs... Then how come these guys are advertising that they gonno show special screen for G.W.Bush...???

Well done!!

This is the best review I have read about Dasavatharam. I am also a Rajni fan. But went to the movie with an open mind. I didn't go with huge expectations, as I spoke to one of my friends earlier who had watched it the first day. Still the movie has disappointed me. Sivaji was certainly much better.

Subha's Comment

Even though in your review you have kept saying that this comments where not biased but it very much looks so...

The last thing in the movie to be appreciated is the make-up, as there are lot of other things that needs an applaud. One eg is when he mentions about America spending huge money on such dangerous weapons which can destroy a country.

Also on the hype part dont think that even 50% hype that was created for Sivaji by fans like you was created for Dasa. Most of the movies of Kamal has only a controversy before the release and if you call that as a hype, sorry cant be accepted.

The entire review is only ont he make up and the rating that you have given itself has a flaw in it. The Nambi character is again not to be compared with the rest of the character make up as its the Kamal himself with out make up.

On the story part i am quite surprised to even know how one can say that there is no story in the movie. This shows the understanding capacity of our viewers.

I wud suggest you to watch the movie again even to understand what he has tried to say, knowing from your review i can only conclude that you have not understood the movie.

One sad feeling after reading this review is to know how much youngster in todays world are more towards Massala mixed entertainments. Ofcourse when movies like Anbe Sivam cannot become a box office hit and score commercial movie title one can understand the taste of people.

The happy part is that Kamal fans can quite be sure that such wonderful creation would still continue.

I am writing this being a hard core die hard fan of Kamal Hassan.

Here are a Few points from your reviews that i AGREE and DISAGREE.

"I'm not going to narrate the story here as there is nothing significant to be narrated as such."----Please watch the movie again.

"The first twenty minutes of the movie seemed to justify the hype created, but sadly there ends the fascination. After that, its all about drama, chasing and usual cinema stuff."----Yes, the tempo/energy level reduced dramatically.

"Mallika Sherawat singing and dancing for a tamil song in a Las Vegas night club and the pistol taking away the cancer from Avtar Singh's throat are good examples for the blemishes."----lol, s that was kinda too odd and bad.

"But, once you come out after watching the movie, you can't help the feeling that the story is made to fit the ten characters and not the other way round"-----Sorry.I never felt so.(i forgot he was in 10roles)

"it is quite difficult to imagine such a dumb teenage girl in this era"-----True i constantly had a doubt if she was from dis era or of the 12th century.i think that was probably the aim of the role.Else there wouldn't be the bridge between the centuries.

"The response in the B and C centers remains to be seen, as there are nothing much in this movie to please them."------ There is something to please everybody. They might not have had the same understanding due to tech terms yet it will please them. And s,u don't even have to know NaCl u must know "vuppu"(salt).

Overall it was a Good review :P

"THE MOVIE IS A HIT"

I am not a huge fan of blogging Indian Movies esp when it comes to Rajni and Kamal movies as I have come across some trash blogs. This one seems to be handled by mature folks... Kudos for keeping it sane.

I totally agree with the review, it’s fair and most of the normal Tamil movie goers would walk out with a similar verdict. For the record, I am a Kamal fan and at 32 I am mature enough to critique a movie on its merits. My one liner for this movie will be - "Could have been better".
Regarding the story, if this is a novel written by Michael Crichton, it would easily make the NY Times best sellers, in the mould of Jurassic Park etc... Dealing with abstract theories like Chaos Theory and Butterfly Effect is not a trivial task and you need both mature movie makers and audiences to understand and appreciate the concepts. The story line really does an awesome job to portray these theories; however, it’s difficult to illustrate the details within the short time span. So, the screenplay and the screen adaptations were pretty weak. In addition, it’s obvious that Indian movie industry distinctly lacks technical expertise to produce high quality CG, and not to mention the forgettable songs, it’s easy to arrive at my verdict (Could be better).
If you notice, I did not mention anything about the 10 characters; bcos, I don’t think Kamal has anything to prove by performing 10 distinct characters. He has done enough at least for me to make MY top 10 best actors in world. So, the question that I ask myself is, does the story need 10 characters, the answer is a BIG YES. If you cannot bring in at least 10 different folks in the mix, there is no way one could explain these abstract concepts. In addition, the movie tries to deal with religion and social injustice.

In conclusion, this movie is one of the path breaking movies with respect to the ATTEMPTS at pulling Indian movie to the next level of movie making, from a technical and story telling aspect. Therefore, Kuruthi Punal still stays as my number 1 Kamal movie (may be tamil movie) and Dasavatharam would not make my A list of Kamal movies.

This is for your information,In Dubai The Dasavtharam picture was filmed for continuous 2 months.Normally all the tamil picture will be filmed for 1 week or maximum 2 weeks. Its a real record that all the show were house full. It became the "talk of the City" in Dubai.Even arabs,Indians from northern part, pakisthanis were keen in knowing about the movie. "Shivaji" The movie acted by Rajni went for 4 weeks in the same theatre(Galleria-Hyatt-DeiraDubai).Iam not a Kamal or rajni fan. Watching Dasavtharam gave me a happy mood than any other movies. Except the graphics everything has attained International Quality. Graphics are the black dots of the film.Chennai supports graphics for many Holywood movies, why this shown in a very cheaper manner. But the movie should not be compared with Shivaji. Dasavtharam is incomparable among any INdian movies.

Yes RP is right the film made every one watch twice thrice. It is more than expected. The movies is most superior and the very advanced among Indian movies. One should watch four times to enjoy the whole movie since it is over loaded with numerous hidden messages. People having mind blocks and those who are closed minded can not appreciate the movie. Generally We tamilians we are just geting carried away buy the past images of the Hero, whenever we watch a movie it appears 100 % superb even the hero has performed 5 %, this is a form of illusion. When a guy who knows nothing about the hero and after wacthing the movie if he says it is good, then it is the real success of the movies. It was not happened in shivaji but has happpened in Dasavatharam>!!!!!!Hello Tamilians Let us be rationalised and openminded.
