A day with my demigod - SUPER STAR RAJINIKANTH

7th May, 1992 - This day happened to be the most important and unforgettable day of my life, when I met my Demi-God, Super Star Rajinikanth. I was a 7 year old kid then, when this happened. I was happily spending my vaccation in chennai with my parents. Everybody in my family knew that I am a big time Rajini fan and even in that age I never miss to watch any of his movies in theatres. As for every other fan, it was like a dream for me to meet the legendary Super Star and pose for a photograph with him. Thanks to Sethu mama for having made that happen!!

He is a photographer by profession and though he is not into cinema, fortunately for me, he was in touch with the "Kavithalaya" production house which belongs to the veteran director K.Balachander. Knowing that am a frenzied fan of the super star, he took interest to arrange a meeting with him by taking the help of his friends working in the "Kavithalaya" unit.

Before I pen down the incident, I should explain why I chose to write about it now, after about 16 years. It is needless to explain about the intensity of that incident, which was one of the rarest moment of my lifetime and the impact it had was absolutely unimaginable. As I mentioned earlier, it happened during my 3rd standard vacation. I had about a month for the school to re-open. Unlike other times, I was so keen to go to the school and share my joy and ofcourse show the autograph and the photograph to every one and relish it. That was a typical school kid's attitude! It had an impact not only with me, but also with my family members as well. My parents and my grandmother also accompanied me during the visit. Not just me, they were also pretty thrilled about this and we just kept on talking about this for so many years! Now, just when I get to interact with so many fellow fans, I felt that it is necessary to share that ultimate moment with them.

Back to the main track - It came in as a pleasant shock when I was told to get ready to meet the super star in less than an hour. Hurriedly, I purchased an autograph book and started. My parents and my grandma also accompanied me with my uncle and we were travelling to the place where the shooting was taking place. The shooting was happening somewhere in the outskirts of chennai, in a big bungalow. When we entered the bungalow, we saw the man himself sitting in a sofa alongside with Janagaraj in the break time of the shooting. I was undergoing a mixture of emotions. I was extremely happy and at the same time, I was very nervous - a typical feeling that comes when you are extremely overwhelmed and it was hard to believe the reality! Immediately when he saw my parents coming towards him, he stood up, paired his hands together and said "vanakkam". This is no big surprise as everyone knows the humbleness and simplicity of this great man, but even then my parents were awestruck by this gesture. I hardly spoke anything to him as I was shy and stood near my mom. It was my grandma who introduced me to him as his die-hard fan. He smiled at me and asked my name, when I gave him my autograph book. He wrote my name on it and autographed it and gave it back to me, with a gentle tap on my cheeks. I was so dumb that I didnot even care to smile at Janagaraj or get his autograph as I remained there staring at the super star.

"Shot ready" was the call from the director Suresh Krishna and he wasted no time in moving towards the spot. It was my first experience to watch a cinema shooting and I was anxiously waiting to see it. There was a small room in the front side of that bungalow, out of which a board saying "Mahalakshmi bank" was hung. They shot the scene where Rajini collects money from the bank, ties up in his towel and stands up to stare at the camera, which also happens to be the beginning of the "Vetri Nichayam" song. It didnot take much time to shoot that scene and it was "okay"ed by the director in a couple of takes.

When he came out of that room, my uncle went near him and requested for a photograph with me. I was again tensed and stood beside my mom. Immediately after my uncle requested him, he showed no hesitation and said, "Ya, sure..." and even called me by my name and gently pulled my hand towards him, hugged from behind and elegantly posed for the photograph. It all happened in a flash! After the camera was clicked, he went on for shooting the next scene. It was truly amazing that he remembered my name and showed great respect to my parents despite being such a big super star.

This was the ultimate moment! Could you see the director Suresh Krishna "out of focussed" at the background?

It was like a dream come true and I apologize to the readers since am finding it really tough to narrate my emotions. It not only made my day but also made me more popular in my neighbourhood, school and among relatives. Even today, I am proud to show this photograph to everyone and I would continue to do it until I get to meet him again and take another photograph with him. This time - me hugging him!

Welcome to the IPL extravaganza !

Photos Courtesy : Dinamalar

IPL - The most hyped, expected, speculated and controversial cricket league in the world has taken off swiftly, after a glitzy opening ceremony. However, in a week's time it has become the most happening thing in this part of the world. The opening ceremony deserves a special mention as it was so lucrative and the organizers of the world cup will have to put special efforts to bring out something close to this one. Thanks to Dr.Vijay Mallya for all the efforts. For those who questioned the success of the tournament and the amount of money involved, the first round of matches has given an astounding reply.

Twenty20 - cricket's youngest child has become the most popular format in India and no wonder, the IPL has chosen to cash in on it. It was indeed exciting to watch Ricky Ponting and Ishant Sharma celebrating their success of dismissing Rahul Dravid. The biggest edge of this league is the signing of the big names in world cricket - Ricky Ponting, Adam Gilchrist, Andrew Symonds, Brett Lee, Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath, Matthew Hayden, Mark Boucher, Jacques Kallis, Sanath Jayasuriya and so on. Having bagged so many international players, one can expect the star power to workout magic interms of pulling the crowd to the staduim. Besides big time money making for the players as well as the organizers, the fact that only four international players can take field at a time, has opened up gates for accomodating young Indian players in the side. This is a great opportunity for them to rub shoulders with the veterans and to feel the pressure of playing big games.
It has been raining sixes and boundaries ever since the tournament commenced and it has been an action packed week so far. One good thing about this shortest version of the game, is its glorious uncertainity. That makes it interesting too. Unkike its rival league - the ICL, where the foreign players' perfomance over-shadowed local talents, we would like to see some match winning perfomances here from our local guys like Virat Kohli, S Badrinath, Shikar Dhawan, R Ashwin and others. Besides the U-22 players of India, the IPL has interestingly roped in a few uncapped international prospects like Luke Ronchi, the explosive wicket keeper batsman, David Hussey - Mike Hussey's sibling and a few other players from the Australian domestic circuit.

"There is no friendship on the field" - As Yuvraj Singh quotes, its gonna be a different experience for us to watch these games with the unusual scenario of the rivals playing together and unusual new rivalry building up. Who would not love to watch McGrath bowling to Ponting and Sachin Tendulkar taking on Anil Kumble? People would be keen to see how great players like Sachin tendulkar and Sanath Jayasuriya playing for the same side, operate in tandem. But, it would be interesting to see how the passion picks up among the crowd. This is new to the Indian crowd as they are only used to the nation vs nation contests. Just as football's English Premier League, we hope that the IPL should also become a massive hit and also be a giant leap towards the globalization of this wonderful game.

Being an Indian in America

Two months passed by ever since I landed in the US. As every other alien landing in this country, I am now undergoing the transition cycle. After completing the immigration at the JFK airport, I had to go to some other terminal to catch my flight to San Francisco. It was hard to believe when someone told me that I need to catch a train to get to the other terminal. The first fascination would occur when you come out of the airport and see the roads. From then on, it happens every now and then whenever you see something new.

A transition happens in course of time which prepares you to accommodate yourself with the American lifestyle.

The first and foremost thing would be the multiplication math. With our parsimonious mindset, shopping becomes a terrible thing. Whenever you intend to buy something, you multiply it with forty, compare it with Indian money and ultimately end up buying nothing.

The way you dress up is more important in this country. When you wear tight shirts (which are famously called as short shirts back in India) t.shirts or tight pants, you will be labelled as a 'gay'. Also, guys got to be wary about choosing colors. Any pink shade or girlish color should strictly be avoided. Guys generally wear very loose dresses here. Gals dress up the other way round, obviously :D You can see the "dangerously low-waist" jeans which people wear below their waist. It would be a thriller to watch them walking as you never know when is it gonna come down!

One can never really say when the words like “dude”, “buddy”, etc surreptitiously enters your vocabulary and you start using them quite often. You get to see a variety of people here - almost people from all parts of the world can be spotted. Mexicans, Chinese and Desis(Indians living away from home) are most common, while in Desis there is another category. They are called as the ABCD - American Born Confused Desis. Well, they are really confused as to which way to lead their lives - Indian or American. When you start calling a fellow Indian as “Desi”, then you are almost done with the first phase of transition.

You always try to be disciplined, at least pretend rather. Self-discipline is kind of enforced here, so you have no choice but to be like that. For instance, when you open a door and enter somewhere, you cannot bang the door on the face of the person following you. You got to wait for him and hold the door until he gets inside.

Then comes the choice of food. Unlike people’s imaginations, it is not a next to impossible task to survive as a vegetarian in here. There are always choices to make and it purely depends on the individual. Even in remote places where the Indian population is low, you can definitely locate a Indian grocery store somewhere around. If you are very keen to stick to the “vegetarianism”, it is very much possible. If you decide to cut loose, chicken burgers and hamburgers are always inviting.

Drinking is a social habit here and a party without drinks is never called a party. My jaws dropped and eyeballs popped out when I first saw Desi gals(am already done with the transition… he he) drinking in a party. But then, this is America. Again, this also is not a “must-cultivate” kind of culture once you step into the US. By now, so many people have challenged me that I could not remain a teetotaller anymore. I have gleefully accepted the challenge and living up to it.

USA is a land of choices – You can live the way you want. When you catch up a new habit here, you are totally responsible for it and definitely cannot put the blame to the society or people or the culture. People talking about the imposing situations which made them to drink or smoke are timorous of accepting their fault. One cannot cite a typical situation as a reason which made him drink. Situations can never be so compelling, coz they are created by us, after all!

A legend departs

It was a fascinating week. It was full of mixed emotions as far as a true cricket fan is concerned. India managed to thrust the thorns deep into Australia's skin after the eventful test series. Two straight demoralising defeats pushed Australia to a 'never-before' panic situation. Amidst all the drama, it was a quiet farewell for the legendary cricketer of all times - Adam Gilchrist.

Not certainly the fairy tale ending to a fabulous career, but it had to happen. Gilli would have liked a different ending to his career, but he should be a happy man at the end of the day. His contributions to Cricket Australia and world cricket is more valuable. Batting at no.7 in test matches, Gilli has produced some scintillating knocks which revolutionised the batting style in test cricket. According to me, Hayden wouldn't have been so successful without him.

His records speaks for himself - I need not put anything new. So many things are written about him at this juncture, this article is nothing special. But, being a die-hard cricket fan and since Gilli is one of my all-time favourites, I felt that it is necessary to record something from my part as curtains fall on a great cricketer's career.

I remember watching Gilli's debut ODI match way back in 1996 against South Africa which Australia lost. Ironically, Australia lost the final ODI which he took part. I am fortuante enough to watch both these matches. Like Shane Warne's and Steve Waugh's, Gilli's retirement is also on a high except for the fact that his team is not on a good run. One can hardly spot a lean patch in his career in both forms of the game, which is a rare happening for a wicket-keeper batsman. He was brilliant with the bat and amazing behind the stumps. Even though he has not had the best of relationships with the ace spinner Warne, it has never been a problem on the field. Unlike Steve Waugh, Gilli always walks out immediately without even waiting for the umpire's decision if he knows that he is out. This makes him a genuine cricketer more than his technical brilliance.

Bye Bye Gilli ! We miss you...

Signing off,
Gowri Shankar

Come back

It's been quite some time ever since a new post popped up in my blogpage. There was a important transition which occurred in my life that brought me to the United States last weekend. Time to look ahead... New place, new people. Its gonna be different, interesting and ofcourse challenging. The reason for not posting is definitely not lack of time, as it cannot be true. Everyone in this world has only twenty four hours a day and may be I did not prioritize or allocate time for it.

"Great people come back in great style" - Just as Rahul Dravid did a couple of days back with a confident knock of 93 against Australia. Here is my comeback post(exactly after two months) and hoping to carry on without any hurdles.

Thank you for your support!

Call for world cricket revamp - Just Unfair

John Buchanan, the former coach of the Australian cricket team has suggested new ways of promoting cricket. “Franchise based system”, he calls it with which the players are given the option of choosing the countries which they want to represent. He should’ve probably made this statement with only Australia in his mind, as he has stated that most of the talented youngsters fail to make it to the highest level as the competition is too stiff to get a place in the national side. Australia’s domestic cricket is the strongest of all other existing structures around the globe. With 18 counties in England and a unbelievably huge pool of players, England still are not impressive. They have produced great players, but not yet found a team which could win at least one major tournament.

Allowing the players to migrate from one country to another may probably allow a greater flow of players in World Cricket, but I don’t think this would work out in the sub-continent. Especially, in our country where cricket is not just a game, people would never digest a foreign player representing India and also a Indian player representing some other country. However, this is not new in the world of cricket, as we all know that Kevin Pietersen, the England batsman was a citizen of South Africa. There are other cases like this as well.

Recruiting players from countries like Australia, India and allowing them to play at different countries is a good idea, but they cannot be allowed to represent the country as such. Like football, promotional leagues may be sketched by the ICC involving young players from all the countries, form teams and make them play in test and one day tournaments. The “club culture” which prevails in football can be tried out in cricket in order to encourage greater flow of players.

Cricket, especially the one day format has become like a horse race, where the favorites win all the time. However, this “franchise based system” cannot be a solution to stop Australia’s dominance in world cricket. Strength against strength – This is probably the way to stop them . At present, a few teams which look good on paper, succumb to Australia when they take on them on the field. Thankfully, Twenty20 format has not been that way.

It is pathetic that the ICC has also shown interest on Buchanan’s ideas, and thinking about relaxing the rules of players' migration. Though it has not been discussed seriously, this would surely be a flop if implemented. The need of the hour is not a world cricket revamp, but the domestic structure revamp. Upcoming leagues like IPL and ICL would sure be good enough to nurture the talent pool especially in a big country like India, provided they offer a chance to young talents and make them play along with the seniors.

Shopping Mania

T.Nagar – The shopping paradise of Chennai was no different this year. With hardly 10 days away from Diwali, you can see fleetness among the crowd, busy with their shopping. With huge stores attracting the crowd, T.Nagar easily becomes the most happening place in Chennai. The traffic strategy adopted by the Chennai traffic police was pretty handy and helped the mobility of the crowd to some extent. The construction of flyover in Usman road added to the traffic policemen’s headache. Despite all these hurdles, crowd was continuously pouring in and infact, there was a significant increase in the number of people visiting T.Nagar this year.

The shopping style of the consumers has undergone a sea change over the years. Even though the shopping malls prove to be a major crowd-puller especially for youth, T.Nagar stands tall with its ever-growing popularity! There are in fact certain drawbacks like lack of parking space (driving in T.Nagar during these days, a night mare and finding a parking place is even bigger) etc., but it has been the major destination for shopping. However, people who don’t mind spending more prefer other big outlets, rather than gasping amidst the fleeting crowd. But, most people say T.Nagar gives them the real shopping experience! ( I suppose all gals would agree with me)

Today (28th October), Chennai experienced some heavy down-pour that continued since overnight and lashed quite heavily at times. Driven by curiosity, me and my uncle took the car and drove to T.Nagar to see how rain has affected the business. As expected, the traffic was not terrific in pondy bazaar and near panagal park, the roads looked relatively void (as per its previous standards). But, all the crowd were seen inside the shops! Unable to come out in the rain, people who were inside the shops were standing at the entrance with umbrellas in their hands. You usually get to see only heads in panagal park, but this time, it looked different. Instead of heads, umbrellas were seen! Take a look at the pictures which I managed to take sitting inside the moving car… You can see a lot of people holding umbrellas and standing at the entrance of Saravana Stores.

Seems like nothing can stop people from shopping! The consumer market in this part of the country has grown like anything and has caught the attention of all big players in business. It has been said that about 70-80% of the gold sold in Chennai is from this region. Buyer’s potential has shot up significantly compared to the last decade and the emergence of hyper markets and shopping malls and the kind of business they make prove it right.

Crowd in T.Nagar lights up the festive mood in Chennai. Diwali is underway and by
this time, lot of people would have already burnt a hole in their purses and for people those who are waiting for the 1st of November to arrive and yet to go for diwali shopping, get ready for a big one!

Wishes for a happy, colorful and safe diwali...!

Cheers!!!

Witnessing the spoilsport, yet again!

29th September 2007 - Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore – It was all set for Bangalore to host a superb one-day match between Australia and India. Expectations ran high among the fans as India stunned everyone by winning the World Twenty20 tournament which was concluded recently. I traveled all the way to Bangalore from Chennai to watch this match. I could manage only a couple of tickets for me and my friend, who has a great reputation of carrying the rain with him wherever he goes. Yes! I’ve watched quite a few matches with him, but 4 out of 5 matches that I watched with him were rain-affected.

The first one being the fifth day of the test match between India and Australia, which was affected by rain, which forced a draw. The second one is a ODI match between India and South Africa, which was abandoned due to rain, without a ball being bowled. Third is the India vs Sri Lanka test match and the fourth one is the challenger series final match which was played between India A and India B. The only match that was not rain-affected being the India vs West Indies ODI, which we lost!

My friends warned me about taking this risk, but I was very confident that it’ll not happen again. But, we decided to take the risk of challenging our luck since both of us knew about the passion both of us have towards the game. With white clouds all around, it appeared to be a perfect day for cricket that morning. The match was scheduled to start at 2.30pm, but as usual we were present at the stadium at 11.30am. There were some tedious security procedures which I had to undergo before entering the stadium. The policemen at the gates snatched the newspaper that I had and checked my pockets. I was irritated as I could not take the newspaper inside. People who have watched a cricket match in Chennai will know the importance of carrying a newspaper inside the stadium. You can’t really imagine sitting on the chairs without cleaning it with a newspaper. Most of the times, people used to put the newspapers on the chairs and sit on them.

After the first level security check was done, I entered the stadium which was unlike the Chennai stadium, properly maintained and I was even more pleasantly shocked when I saw a barcode scanner which was used to scan the tickets. Another security check was there, this time it was more serious as two guys were around me, with one checking with the metal detector and the other one, checking my pant pockets. Third round of checking was even more horrible as the police guy who checked my pockets again, threatened to squeeze my balls as he was vigorously doing the searching process. He checked my socks, my wallet and I was asked to unlock the keypad of my cell phone and show the display to him!!

Huh…. After undergoing the tedious security checks, we managed to get inside and find seats for us. Thank God, there was no need for the newspapers as the chairs were pretty clean. We had the liberty of choosing our seats as there was not much crowd there at that time. It was a beautiful ground, a bit small when compared to the Chennai ground with the electronic advertisement boards and a good electronic score board. After sometime, the players walked in for net practice with a huge roar in the crowd. We enjoyed the atmosphere there as the crowd were pouring in and the excitement was building. India lost the toss and bowled first. There were a lot to cheer about when the first four wickets fell quickly, but since then we could not but appreciate Michael Clarke and Haddin’s beautiful stroke play.

After 50 overs, the Australians amassed 307 runs, which appeared to be quite a big total to chase under the conditions, but since we Indians live on hopes, we hoped that our batsmen could do it, just as we hope every time. When Sachin Tendulkar and Gautam Gambhir (Gambhir opened the innings as Ganguly was injured) walked in, the crowd was on their feet. It was absolutely electric. It started to drizzle in the first over and it got heavier as time went on. To add to the misery of the spectators, Sachin was dismissed by Mitchell Johnson. It was a pin-drop silence in the stadium and Pathan walked in at number 3. Gambhir managed to score a couple of boundaries in the next over off Brett Lee but then, the rain got heavier and the covers came on. Alas!!! It happened again….

It is the worst feeling to wait inside the stadium, hoping for the rain to stop. After a continuous heavy downpour for one hour, it stopped. Huge cheer from the crowd again!! The India vs Pakistan Twenty20 finals was put on the screen when rain interrupted play, which entertained the crowd a little bit. The ground staff worked hard to make play possible. The super zoppers were busy sucking water all over the ground. It was announced that play might be extended to one hour if needed and also, the equation of the Duckworth-Lewis method. We were really happy that we could at least witness a twenty over game. India’s target was 165 in 20 overs in the DL equation. We firmly believed that India chase the target, considering their present Twenty20 form.

Two and a half hours passed by and the umpires made their way to inspect the pitch. Both the umpires were discussing seriously and nothing came out. Our patience was tested. Finally, it was announced that match was abandoned due to wet outfield. We got totally pissed off and stated cursing ourselves for having come all the way to watch rain play spoilsport. It is a terrible feeling to experience this again and again. India vs Pakistan test match is coming up this December at Bangalore, but I am seriously re-thinking about going to Bangalore to watch it.

Twenty20 - Excitement galore!

The sweetest sound of the ball hitting the juicy part of the willow, followed by a huge roar in the crowd – You’ll get to hear these very often now. Yes, the Twenty20 world cup has kicked-off and its time for some excitement. Initially, I was one among those who criticized this format of the game citing various reasons like no scope for bowlers, etc., But, I had to soften my anti-Twenty20 stance after watching the Australia v Zimbabwe match. It was a cracker of a match and Zimbabwe’s stunning triumph sent the most significant message to all cricket teams around the world – On any given day, any team can beat any team, no matter how strong you are.

It has been said that the bowlers don’t get a chance to show off their talents, but I don’t see that happening. Though it is a batsmen’s game, there are a lot of things to do for the bowlers. Bowling in the Twenty20 game requires a lot of skill and character. Its all about showing variations, putting the ball in the right areas
and bowling well in tandem. They should start attacking from the word 'go' and they cannot afford to relax at any point. We saw the Proteas bowl exceptionally well during the death overs against England and the lights of Vettori, Flintoff, Jayasuriya were impeccable with the angle they bowled, making life difficult for the batsmen. It’s all about skill which really matters. In fact, the batsmen don’t have many options but to somehow find the boundaries. When the shots in the book don’t work, they should probably play a few strokes like Dougie Marillier. The power plays, free hits and the most sensational bowl-out are all included to spice up the game. The crowd could not have asked anything more at Durban when they witnessed a truly spectacular game of cricket. It’s hard to express those joyous moments when India clinched the thriller with a bowl-out.

Let us wait and see how this Twenty20 cricket is gonna affect the 50 over format. 300 was once a impossible target but today, even 400 is being chased. The evolution of Twenty20 could well take the one-day games to another level. We can hopefully see teams scoring over 400 consistently and also chasing it successfully. I see this as a major opportunity for the minnows to narrow the gap between them and the test playing nations by playing more Twenty20 cricket.

ICC hopes for globalization of the game with this format. We can also hope that cricket becomes a part of the Olympic Games as the time duration is reduced to just three and half hours per game. I can now expect a true competitive cricket match even when Australia plays Bangladesh. Cricket, a game of glorious uncertainties gets even more uncertain when it gets much shorter.

Though ICC is eyeing on the financial implication of the game, there should be no negligence shown for the test matches. The real essence of cricket lies in test cricket. The real skills of a cricketer can be evaluated only in test matches. Besides watching the willows behave violently, we would like to watch a good battle between the bat and the ball. The ICC should encourage Twenty20, without diluting the number of test matches in future which is very healthy for the game.

Cheers….!

I swear – iPod is the best invention of this decade. Undoubtedly, it is the best of all the gadgets that I have. iPod is too good but at times, that itself becomes a problem. The following poem (not sure whether it really is a poem) is an outcome of my frustration on an insomniac night….

In search of sleep....

It was another weary day

I lay on my bed

Trying hard to rest my brain

Too many problems thrust upon

Eyelids refuse to kiss each other

In search of sleep, I scuffle

I finally decide to switch on my iPod

Sleep comes on click of a button

A perfect example of how mechanical

My life has become

Music makes its way to my ears

I enjoy the pleasurable sensation it creates

In search of a better song, I browse

Too many choices to make

Not convinced on one,

I keep hopping from one song to another

It makes me impatient

Yes, man’s soul is a monkey

Realization happens again.

I decide to give-up the search for song

And get back to the search of sleep

The struggle continues….

Too many cooks spoil the food

Too many choices spoil the mood
